The following is an excerpt from an article that was originally published in Issue 2 of inCiderJapan magazine.
Brian Kenner is a man on a mission. As the owner of over two-hundred acres of orchard property in Julian, California, which includes two orchards planted with hundreds of apple and pear varietals, and supply agreements with other local growers, Kenner and his wife, Kathleen, hope to put Julian on the map as a producer of world-class, terroir-driven craft hard ciders and perry. Kenner fermented over 150 different types of heritage fruit and cultivars in 2017, with plans to increase that number as many more varieties begin producing fruit over the next few years. inCiderJapan caught up with Brian at his ranch in late January to learn more about Julian Ciderworks, Kenner’s cider making philosophy, and his thoughts about the future.
